SEO Basics – Google’s Secret



In this article, I will share with you some SEO basics and Google’s secret in Search Engine Optimization.

google secretHave you ever asked yourself or someone how Google really works? I’m pretty sure, if you’re a green horn SEO enthusiast, this will be your most searched topic and the most eager to learn. When you do a Google Search, you will be presented with a list of results. These are pages that Google thinks the most relevant to your searched keyword or key phrases. Now, how does “Big G” – Google find web pages matching your query and then determine the ranking of the search result? The simplest way to describe Google is like looking at a huge book with an index of topics and contents.

There are three major processes in bringing searched results to your SERP ( Search Engine Results Page)

1. Crawling – Does Google know your site and can it find it? This is the process by which Googlebot finds out new and updated pages that are to be added to the Google Index. Google uses  vast number of computer to crawl billion pages in the internet. Googlebot, also known as crawler or spider does the fetching. This is the program or algorithmic process that determines which sites to crawl, how often, etc…

Google initiates the crawl with a record of web pages and sitemaps generated from the last crawl. As it visits each web site, it detects new and updated links and adds to the list to crawl. New sites changes to existing sites and dead links are noted and used to update the index. Search side of Google is separate from the AdWords Service so you cannot pay Google to crawl a site more frequently.

2. Indexing – Can Google index your site? Googlebot course through one by one of the pages as it crawls to collect an index of all words and their location on each page. Additional process information includes key content tags and attributes such as/but not limited to Title, ALT, H1, bold and emphasis.

3. Serving – Does the site have good and useful content that is relevant to the search? When a user enters the searched query, Google’s computers explores its existing index for matching pages and then returns the results Google believes the most relevant. Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors as Google quoted. One of the most significant factor is PageRank for a given page. PageRank measures the importance of a page based on the incoming links from other pages. In plain words, each link to a page on your site from site adds to your PageRank. But take note that not all links are equal. The best types of links are those that are given based on the quality of your content.
